The majority of problems that present to A&E are straightforward and don’t require a consultant’s input. Casualty doctors therefore act as a triage, signposting patients to the appropriate speciality when needed, treating and discharging others. For the genuine emergencies – the life-saving, blue lightsblazing, drop-everything situations – there is a dedicated crash team. This comprises senior surgeons, anaesthetists and medics as well as the casualty doctors. So a lack of consultant cover at night time is not the reason for the current problems in A&E.
