Performed, like trova, by one or two vocalists accompanied on the guitar, it was a style rather than a form, incorporating elements commonly found in North American jazz. The lyrics were occasionally bittersweet, a lover’s lament in the manner of the bolero; more often, however, they were concerned with direct emotional expression, of which Portillo was a master. “Poetry would come to me as a code without me noticing it,” he declared.
