Cabbage, in its various Savoy, spring and red forms, was developed in Germany between the 12th and 16th centuries. Brussels sprouts are also not too far from the original species, differing only in the production of enlarged, axillary winter buds, each like a tiny cabbage. Surprisingly, sprouts were the last variety of cabbage to be developed, first appearing near Brussels in the mid 18th century.
