He very much needed to move them to an even more isolated location, Death Valley. But there was no money. In the violent scramble for funds, Manson swindled, then murdered a drug dealer. When a Family associate was arrested in another extortion attempt gone lethally wrong, Manson had every reason to fear the cops would close in on him.
