Hess's Energy Marketing unit had more than $6bn in revenues in 2012, and Centrica said its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation are forecast to be $200m this year. The company said the deal would build on its current position in North America, where its subsidiary Direct Energy operates in 46 US states and has 5.5m customers.
