Reading it made me realise just how much harm has been done by adopting Shiskins definition of recession as the ultimate criterion. Restricting it to 2 successive quarters of negative GDP growth is an easy notion to understand and measure, but really does not describe economic and social conditions very well. For example, it does not take into account how the majority of the population is faring. It doesnt even take into account population growth which, for some countries, is substantial relative to GDP growth.
