This model to raise money for a charity  hold an event with the organizers bearing the cost of running it, convince some people to participate, convince other people to donate to a charity by sponsoring participants  is hardly novel. Its the same model used for years by walkathons, runs, cycling events, etc., in every decent-sized community in the U.S.
