On every crowded page of his Busytown books, the first of which, the Best Word Book Ever, was published 50 years ago, he created an uproarious carnival of calamity, often culminating in a multi-vehicle pile-up. Children loved the detail – every item was labelled, each page categorised – and the disaster. Somehow the townsfolk – a menagerie of anthropomorphised pigs, dogs, cats, goats, owls – always escape unscathed: after each disaster they pick themselves up and carry on, bright-eyed and questing.
