But in these final months of his commissionership — he insists he is going to retire at the end of next season, and those closest to him say that nothing will change his mind this time — there has been a new sense of urgency on Selig’s part to get it all right. One of the biggest issues to plague him during his stewardship over the game has been the quality of umpiring and the preponderance of blown calls — too often in the postseason before national TV audiences. The new instant-replay challenge system, which Selig announced Thursday, should go a long way to address that. Atlanta Braves president John Schuerholz, who headed up Selig’s committee on instant replay, called it “an historic moment for baseball” that will “give our managers the ability to help control calls that impact the game.”
